| (Photos Below) Important Washo degikup basket woven by Tootsie Dick Sam, circa 1910. Antelope Valley, California. Coiled on a three rod foundation, sewn/woven with white split willow shoots, black dyed brackenfern root and red split fall redbud shoots. 6" ht. x 9" diameter. Price on request. Public Exhibitions: Native American Basketry: The Hartman Collection at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, 1996.
Published : "Native American Basketry: The Hartman Collection" (Copy of book included with purchase.)
The degikup form is an evenly stitched , near spherical form created by Washo weaver Louisa Keyser (better knows as Dat so la lee) and marketed by Carson City basket dealer Abe Cohn. A small handful of Datsolalee's peers also became famous for their finely woven Washo degikups which now rank among the most desired and collectible of all early baskets -- Tootsie Dick Sam is one of that elite group. |
